Travel Sketching

I regret I did not start painting more seriously many years ago, especially when travelling. Although I can still look back at our photos of the many trips we have taken, somehow my sketches done in the past few years during our trips hold more meaning and memories.

I am not interested in painting or sketching images that look like photographs, which are so often taken while quickly travelling "on the move." Sketching forces me to sit still and enjoy the scenery more; to be quiet and thoughtful about a scene. My goal is to capture its mood or feeling while still paying attention to colour, composition and values—all things that contribute to a successful piece of art. Later, while looking through my sketchbooks, I am more readily transported back to that time and place and reminded about what I was feeling and thinking at the time. —Wayne
